The Chelsea striker is being linked with a return to Spain

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has admitted that he would love to see Chelsea striker Diego Costa return to the Vicente Calderon.

The Spain international has been linked with a return to his native Spain for some time, while other reports have suggested the Brazil-born striker could make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.

Cerezo has admitted it will be difficult to tempt Chelsea to let go of their top goalscorer, but cites the likes of manager Diego Simeone and striker Fernando Torres as players who have returned to Atletico in recent years.

“I think it’s difficult but as far as we are concerned we would love it if he came back here,” Cerezo admitted.

“It’s the Atleti way. We have a magnificent relationship with all ex-coaches and players. I went to see Simeone in Argentina when he was at River Plate, that is the way it is with Costa.”

Costa wants out

The 27-year-old striker wants out at Chelsea as he feels he has been vilified by the media and has led to him being given a bad reputation.

However, Atletico know they will have to at least meet the fee they were paid by the Blues, if they are to get the striker back to the Vicente Calderon this summer.

And with Antonio Conte having recently signed a three-year deal to take over at Stamford Bridge, the Italian may want to tempt the striker to stay another season at the Bridge.

Torres rejoined Atletico on loan from AC Milan in December 2014, with the loan deal set to expire at the end of this season, and has scored in Atletico’s last three games – including the opener against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Cerezo is hoping that Costa can also come back to the club to good effect, after making a woeful start to the season, which will see Chelsea not compete in the Champions League next campaign.
