Atletico Madrid’s plans to swoop in for Suarez carelessly left on restaurant table

the list was left in a restaurant in Pozuelo on the outskirts of Madrid, near Atletico’s training ground in Majadahonda, after a meeting between president Enrique Cerezo, chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and other Atletico directors.

Sevilla captain Ivan Rakitic, Marseille playmaker Mathieu Valbuena and Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel were also reported to be on the list but it is the ambitious plan to capture Suarez that takes centre stage.

The Liverpool star was heavily linked with a move to Atleti’s city rivals Real Madrid last summer while Arsenal failed with an infamous bid of £40 million and £1.

The Uruguayan appears settled at Anfield now but would be expected to seek a move if Brendan Rodgers’ men fail to clinch Champions League football, something Atletico are certain to be able to offer.

Atletico’s attempts to build a team of ‘Galacticos’ is dependent on further investment from Azerbaijan – the club recently extended their shirt sponsorship deal with the country, with whom they initially signed a strategic agreement in January 2013 – with officials from their Azeri investors also present at the meeting.

The list detailed the release clauses and contract expiry dates of the transfer targets.
