Atletico Madrid could be willing to sell £58million rated defender Jose Maria Gimenez in the new year, according to a report in Calciomercato today.
Gimenez has fallen down the pecking order at the Wanda Metropolitano. In the last couple of seasons he has gone from a starter in Diego Simeone’s defence to fourth choice.
The 22 year-old is regarded as one of the best upcoming centre-backs in world football, and has plenty of suitors in the Premier League such as Manchester United and Arsenal.
It was first though that Gimenez would be out of contract next summer, but it was recently revealed that he renewed at the La Liga club until 2020.
Even so, it seems that the Uruguayan will look to leave in order to boost his first team chances. With the World Cup coming up in June, he may even seek an exit in January now that Atletico’s transfer ban has ended.
He is not the only Atleti player that Man Utd are interest in, with rumours surrounding Antoine Griezmann refusing to go away. The Frenchman spoke about his future recently.
