Many football fans believe AVB received the sack due to the summer signings Spurs made not reaching the high performances the club expected. Rumours suggest AVB may not have wanted the entire selection of players they ended up signing.

Les Ferdinand however, has played down these rumours and claims that AVB was aware of and happy with all the signings they made in the transfer market. Some of these rumours suggested Franco Baldini was responsible for some of these signings, but Ferdinand confirms Baldini was given consent from AVB to spend the ÂŁ100 million.

“Most of the signings were perhaps suggestions to him, but he agreed to those suggestions,” Ferdinand told US podcast Beyond the Pitch.

“The bottom line is he agreed to all of those signings. It wasn’t a case that the players were brought in and he was told ‘You have to make a team of these players’, because if you’re a manager and that happens, you’re destined for the sack.

“From speaking to AVB, I understand he was happy that the players came to the club.”

Ferdinand also claims AVB was told that getting into the Champions League was their main expectation this season and with the amount of money that was spent after losing Bale, pressure was going to be high on the team and manager.
