Bacary Sagna happy to play at centre-back

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has admitted that he doesn’t mind playing at centre-back despite his natural position being right-back.

The Gunners are looking very depleted in defence after both Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen are set to miss this weekend’s trip to Craven Cottage due to suspension and injury.

The two losses leave Arsenal with just one recognised centre-back in Per Mertesacker after the club loaned out both Ignasi Miquel and Johan Djourou. They also sold Sebastian Squillaci earlier on in the summer as well.

However, in recent months, Sagna has been used as a centre-back and has actually impressed many Arsenal fans with his performances whilst playing in the heart of the back-four.

The French international has also admitted that he doesn’t mind filling out at centre-back if it’s what will help the team out.

“I enjoy playing at centre-half and will play in any position for my team. Maybe in the future I will play there,” said the Frenchman.

“I am not the tallest, so I try to position myself as well as I can and to stay awake. I communicate all of the time and as long as we communicate it makes it easier.

“I enjoy centre-back because, first of all, you run less; but you have to stay focused mentally all the time and stay strong because it’s all about winning the game.

“I still need to improve if I am to play there again but it was great because we didn’t concede any goals (at Fenerbahce) and for defenders that is the most important thing.

“I might be playing centre-back at Fulham because we have injuries and Laurent (Koscielny) is suspended. I will do my best and try to win three points.”

It is believed that Sagna will partner Mertesacker for the game against Fulham with Carl Jenkinson playing at right-back.
