The Italian looks set to leave after just one season at Anfield

Mario Balotelli’s future at Liverpool is up to him, according to his boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Italy international striker was left out of the Reds’ pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East, and is heavily linked with a move away.

Along with fellow rejects Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique, Balotelli is currently training separately at the club’s Mellwood training complex, seemingly not in Rodgers’ first team plans.

He has slipped further down the pecking order of strikers at Anfield, after Christian Benteke‘s big money signing on Wednesday, along with the arrival of Danny Ings, and the returning Divock Origi.

The former Manchester City man signed for £16 million from AC Milan last summer, but endured a torrid first season back in England.

He scored just 1 Premier League goal last season

“Mario is obviously not on tour but working hard and training well with a number of other players at Melwood,” said the Northern Irishman at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Rodgers also revealed that he remained doubtful that Balotelli would remain a Liverpool player next season, adding:

“I’m not sure, that will entirely be up to Mario. “He is working hard to get fit and we will see when the season begins.”

The often controversial striker’s first season at Liverpool was not a happy one.

In December of last year, Balotelli was given a one match ban for posting a picture on Instagram, that included racist and anti-Semitic references.

The following month, Brendan Rodgers criticised the player for ‘not being good enough’ in training.

Then the 24 year old was accused of showing disrespect to Jordan Henderson, when he took the ball off the then acting captain, to take a decisive penalty in a Europa League tie against Besiktas.
