Lionel Messi has suffered a thigh injury during Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Villareal, confirmed club officials.
What was feared has turned out to be true as the Blaugrana prepares for another game week without their attacking talisman on the pitch.
Messi was making his first start of the 2019/20 season after battling a calf problem throughout pre-season. He set up Antoine Greizman for Barca’s first goal but did not return after a hard tackle forced him out of the pitch. “The player of the first team Leo Messi has an elongation to the adductor of the left thigh,” said a club medical update.
In what has already been a difficult start for Barcelona, losing their best player could take a further toll on Ernesto Valverde’s uncertain future. The Spanish manager has come under fire for the team’s recent performances and could be without a job come September end.
Messi, who recorded his 400th La Liga start against Villareal is a doubt for the upcoming fixture against Getafe. Barcelona are due to face Inter Milan and Sevilla after that before going into an International break.
The Catalan outfit have climbed up to the 5th spot of the La Liga table but are still 4 points behind league leaders and bitter rivals, Real Madrid.
