Barcelona confirm talks to rename Camp Nou

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu says “two or three companies” are in talks to take over the naming rights of Camp Nou.

Bartomeu admitted Camp Nou will go by a corporate name before too long while talking at Bloomberg studios in London.

“Beko was the last [sponsor] that we renewed our agreement with,” said the club president. “The next steps are the naming rights to the stadium.”

Bartomeu also hinted that the value of any deal would be around €300m – half the money required to carry out plans to modernise Barcelona’s 61-year-old home.

Barcelona’s La Liga rivals Real Madrid were recently in talks to sell the naming rights to their Santiago Bernabéu stadium for around €400m. But negotiations with Spanish oil and gas giant Cespa collapsed as they felt Madrid had scaled back on plans to redevelop the ground.

“There are two or three companies we are talking to,” Bartomeu revealed. “Our partner will probably bring us half of the investment,” he added.

The revamp is due to be completed during the 2020/21 season. It will see Camp Nou and the entire surrounding area modernised, including a new stadium for Barcelona B and youth team matches.
