Barcelona have given Ernesto Valverde an ultimatum over his decision to continue as the club’s manager.
The Spanish boss signed a 2-year contract with the Blaugrana in the summer of 2017. Barcelona do have the option of extending his deal for the 2019/20 season but cannot do so without Valverde’s say so.
Recently, the 54-year-old held a meeting with the Barca board, not to discuss his future plans but to sanction a defensive addition. Jeison Murillo has been signed from Valencia and Valverde is yet to reveal his true intentions.
Barcelona are currently at the very top of the La Liga with a 3-point lead over Atletico Madrid and an 8-point one over Real Madrid. Valverde has already won the domestic treble last season but did disappoint in the UEFA Champions League.
Reports claim that the bosses at Camp Nou is happy with their head coach but has asked him to clear out his future plans with them. If he does decide to quit following this season, then the Barca hierarchy can start to look for replacements.
Valverde’s assistant, Jon Aspiazu could be a prime candidate along with Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte.
Barcelona are also happy to comply with Valverde’s transfer requests as he continues to scour the market for more January additions.
