According to the latest reports, Barcelona are looking to gain an advantage in the race for Ajax defender, Matthijs de Ligt.

Plenty of clubs are fighting it out for the 19-year-old’s signature including Liverpool, Bayer Munich and Juventus. de Ligt has gathered a lot of experience at senior level even before entering his adult years.

He has already been capped 13 times for the Dutch national team along with a bunch of appearances at various youth levels.  He has also made over 100 appearances for Ajax, 40 of them in this season.

If you have not seen the youngster play, you should definitely pull out some of his highlight reels. Not only is he incredibly calm on the ball, de Ligt has the ability to dictate the game from the backline.

His footballing maturity is well beyond his early years and is almost in sync with the playing style of Barcelona. His current teammate, Frenkie de Jong has already completed a £66m switch to the Blaugrana in January.

de Ligt understandably wants to move to the Camp Nou where he will have the opportunity to play alongside the defensive midfielder. Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu wants to step up the club’s pursuit of the signing the talented youngster.

A specific report claims that the La Liga giants have already sent their technical director, Eric Abidal to hold talks with de Ligt back in November. The initial conversation has reportedly gone according to plan, opening up the doors for Barcelona to make an official offer soon.
