Barcelona deny reports of any contact with Neymar over a possible return to the club

Reports claiming Neymar’s father has been in contact with Barcelona over his son’s potential return to the Camp Nou have been flatly denied by the Catalan giants.

Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017 for a world-record transfer fee but reports claim that the Brazilian has failed to settle at the French capital, with Lionel Messi speaking in favour of his return to the La Liga.

However, manager Ernesto Valverde has distanced himself from such rumours and club spokesperson Josep Vives confirmed that there has been no phone call from Neymar’s father to club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

“In the first place, that’s not the case, and Neymar left because that’s what he decided, and from there we have nothing more to say,” Vives told reporters.

“We never talked about players who have contracts with other clubs, at the time he decided to leave Barca, a completely legitimate decision on his part.”

Vives further made it clear that Barcelona are unlikely to complete any permanent deals in January, with Jeison Murillo joining the Catalans on loan from Valencia.

However, Barcelona’s transfer budget is expected to receive a boost after Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande made Paulinho’s stay permanent.

Vives told reporters the Chinese Super League side have already paid the fee, reported to be €42million, to complete the transfer.

“We would like to publicly explain the details of such a beneficial operation,” he added.

“But we cannot do it because we are subject to a confidentiality clause with the Chinese club.

“The agreement is magnificent, good for the player, also for the Chinese club and very good for Barcelona.”
