Barcelona star Sergi Roberto has signed a new contract with La Liga leaders until 2022.

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto has signed an extension to his current contract with the Catalan club, which will see him remain at the Nou Camp until 2022.

Confirmed on the official Twitter account, the midfielder will have a release clause of €500m in an attempt to fend off potential suitors. This is done to avoid losing another one of their prospects to European rivals following Neymar’s shock departure to PSG last summer.

Roberto joined the club aged just 14 years old and has gone on to win several major honours with the side currently topping La Liga, including 4 La Liga titles, 2 Champions Leagues, 4 Copa del Reys, 4 Spanish Supercopas, 2 European Super Cups and 2 Club World Cups.

Club President, Bartomeu said: “Sergi Roberto is a player we have for the future and we thank him for the values he represents. He is a key part of the club and he is part of a historic cycle.”

Roberto said: “I have always wanted to be here, I have been a Barca fan since I was little. I have been at Barca for 12 years and my objective is to stay as long as possible.”

He added, “Linking up with Messi is really easy because he makes everything easier. He is the best player in the world and alongside him, we are all better.”
