According to reports from the Sun, Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi. Until the start of this season, Otamendi was a regular for Manchester City ever since he joined the club from Athletic Mineiro in 2015. However, the Argentine defender has struggled for game time under Pep Guardiola this season. So far, he has made 18 appearances for City this season that includes 10 Premier League appearances out of a possible 23.
Pep Guardiola himself admitted that Otamendi has become frustrated due to his lack of game time. Now, Barcelona are looking to sign the 30-year old defender.
Things may go even worse for Otamendi at Manchester City as the club is looking to sign young Ajax teenager Matthijs de Ligt. Hence, his future at Manchester City doesn’t hold much playing time for him. Given that Samuel Umtiti is sidelined at the moment due to a knee injury, Otamendi’s addition can do a lot of good for Barcelona.
As for Otamendi himself, if he joins the Blaugrana, he can have some playing time under Ernesto Valverde as long as Umtiti is injured. However, once Umtiti gets fit, it will be tough for Otamendi to find a place in the playing XI.
Barcelona have already made three signings during the ongoing transfer window. These include defender Jeison Murillo. Their most recent signing was Dutch midfielder Frenkie Jong from Argentina.
