New deal, same Werner as RB Leipzig impress again.

Bayern Munich transfer target Timo Werner has signed a four-year contract extension at RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Sunday.

It has been a whirlwind of a few weeks on the transfer front for Bayern Munich. From bringing in Perisic, Coutinho, and Cuisance, to sending away Sanches – to allegedly turning away from potential moves for Espanyol defensive midfielder Roca and Juventus forward Mandzukic, the Bavarians have certainly found themselves involved in the news.

One player who reportedly wanted to play for Bayern Munich and patiently waited all summer for a move was RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner. Werner was linked to the Bavarians throughout the entire summer, but seemed to be put on the back-burner as they spent the majority of the summer chasing Manchester City’s Leroy Sane.

Now, after much patience, The Red Bulls have seized the moment and inked Werner to a contract extension through 2023. The announcement, which was made just before Leipzig’s first home game of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt, ends speculation that Bayern would sign Werner on a free transfer in 2020.

“I am happy to have extended my contract. It was a long process, but I wanted to be completely sure that I could make the next steps in my development at this club,” he told Bundesliga.com. “I have re-signed for Leipzig and I don’t need to say more on the matter,” he concluded. “Speculation is up to other people.”

According to Kicker magazine, a new buyout clause in Werner’s contract means that Bayern would now have to pay around €30 million to bring the striker to Munich.

Leipzig sporting director Markus Kroesche said the new contract was a “positive signal” for the club, as they look to challenge for the Bundesliga title under new coach Julian Nagelsmann: “It underlines our aim to keep key players with us in the long term and to establish ourselves at the top of the league.”

Timo Werner, who was again on the score-sheet against Frankfurt Eintracht, joined RB Leipzig in 2016, after putting up breakout season with Stuttgart. The 23-year-old has continued his rich vein of form with Leipzig, featuring in 121 matches and has managed to score 61 goals.
