Florentino Perez has claimed he is still confident Benitez is the right man for the job.

Rafa Benitez has been backed tonight by Florentino Perez.

The Real Madrid chief announced that there would be a press conference held this evening and many believed it would be used to announce the sacking of the Spaniard.

However, rather than unveiling Zidane as the club’s new manager, Perez instead claimed that Benitez will be remaining in charge and has their full support.

He said: “We have had a board meeting and analysed the sporting situation at Real Madrid.  Rafa has all our support and all our confidence.

“Rafa Benitez has all the ability and has only just started his job here. Let him keep working and he will achieve his objectives. We are convinced that we have a great squad that will give much happiness to a fanbase that deserves everything. Rafael Benitez is the chosen one to bring success to this squad that since January has struggled.

“Now more than ever he needs the support of all of our followers.

“I understand the unhappiness and the anger of the fan base with what happened on Saturday, but I ask them that they support the team.”

Despite these claims, he did also add that anything could happen in the future regarding the managerial position. As for now though, it appears the ex-Liverpool and Chelsea boss is safe.
