Aston Villa boss won’t stand in Belgium’s way

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has admitted that star-striker Christian Benteke can leave the club in the Summer if he wants to as he won’t stand in his way.

The Belgium international has re-found his old-form in recent weeks, netting eight goals in six games, and Sherwood has admitted that if he wants to leave for a bigger club, he won’t stand in his way.

Benteke had a superb debut season in England after moving from Genk, scoring 23 goals, but this campaign wasn’t the same for the 24-year-old as he struggled with fitness issues.

However, since Paul Lambert lost his job, Benteke looks like his former-self and Sherwood has admitted that a transfer could happen at the end of the season.

Sherwood was talking ahead of the club’s FA Cup Semi Final against Liverpool, and he admitted that he wouldn’t prevent Benteke moving if he wanted to.

Sherwood won’t stop deal

“It (his contract) is certainly something that will have to be addressed,” said Sherwood.

“You don’t really want players going into the last 18 months of their contract.

“He’s someone for the long-term future of the club and you need to protect your interests.

“We don’t want to sell out best players. I also want players who want to play at the football club.

“He’s made no indication to me that he wants to play elsewhere. If he does then we will assess the situation but we want to keep him at the club” Sherwood added.

“You can’t force any player, I’ve been one myself.

“You might as well take the money because you end up without the money or the player if you don’t take it.”
