Benteke insists Liverpool is the right move

He has responded to claims it was the wrong decision

Christian Benteke has hit back at former boss Tim Sherwood’s comments that Liverpool was not the right choice for the striker.

The Aston Villa manager Sherwood said that there was “no point” in Benteke joining a club “where they don’t cross the ball”. He was speaking before the Belgium international completed a £32 million move to Liverpool last month.

And the facts back up Sherwood’s statement, the Reds having made the fewest number of crosses of any Premier League team last season, whilst 13 of Benteke’s 42 career goals for Aston Villa were headers.

Brendan Rodgers has not favoured target men in his time as manager at Anfield, principally after letting Andy Carroll leave in his second season.

But Benteke has reiterated that he is not a one dimensional player, and is confident he can be a success on Merseyside.

“I don’t believe what he said is true and I told him that,” said the 24 year old.

“I said football has changed and the football now is modern and I can adapt. It is not just about crossing, I can score normal goals too. I told him I am not afraid about it.

“If Liverpool bought me, then they know how to use me. That is why I came here and I can show I can play with my feet, too.

“The manager here will use me how he wants. He knows how to do that.”
