Ex-England defender backs Southampton star to become legend
Ex-England international Wayne Bridge has backed Southampton right-back Ryan Bertrand to go on and be as good as Ashley Cole.
Bertrand moved to Southampton after spending 9 years at Chelsea unable to get into the side- because of Cole.
And now the 26-year-old, who won a Champions League medal while at Stamford Bridge, now has shined at St Mary’s since leaving London.
His good form saw him earn his first England call-up for the Euro 2016 qualifying games against Estonia and Lithuania in October.
And now Bridge, who played for both Chelsea and Manchester City, believes Bertrand can go on and be a great player and an established England international,
“I was at Chelsea with Ryan and back then I thought he was a really good player,” Bridge said. “You could see he had something about him.
“I think he has proven himself to be a tremendous signing since he has moved to Southampton, he was just what they needed when they lost Luke Shaw.”
“With Luke out for the rest of the season I think Ryan could definitely secure a spot in the England squad next year.
“He has the potential to be just as good as Ashley was for England.”
