Barcelona won’t break their wage structure to keep the defender

Since Samuel Umtiti joined Barcelona from Lyon in the summer of 2016, he has been their mainstay in the backline. With constant solid performances for the club, he has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world. He has made 81 appearances for the club so far with just one La Liga defeat.

The 24 year old has a release clause of just €60 million which has seen his future called into question. Several clubs are ready to meet that figure with Manchester United one of them. Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the defender and is ready to offer him pay rise if he leaves Camp Nou.

Barcelona is keen to keep the France International and wants to discuss fresh terms but have given boost to United as club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted that they will not break the wage structure to keep the player. Umtiti is demanding an increase in his wages to stay at the club.

He told Cadena Ser: “Umtiti is very important, he knows that, the fans know that.

“He’s only in the second year of his contract but our desire is for him to renew his deal.

“But, as directors, we have to make sure [players’ wages] are within the salary structure to remain a competitive and sustainable club.”
