Borussia Dortmund to offer Ilkay Gundogan new contract

Manchester United have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after the German club announced they are to open talks over a new deal.

Gundogan’s current contract runs out next year, but the Bundesliga side are set to offer him a chance to follow team-mate Marco Reus and commit his futurer to the club.

Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed the news. He told German paper Bild:

“Michael Zorc (Dortmund’s Sporting Director) will certainly tackle this issue in the next weeks.”

Highly-rated playmaker Gundogan has been targeted for a move for some time, and United boss Louis Van Gaal is thought to be chasing a box-to-box midfielder.

Dortmund’s fortunes seem to be finally up after a disasterous first half of the season. They moved out of the relegation zone last Friday after a 4-2 win over Mainz, then came the news of Reus signing his new deal.

It appears that Gundogan may also be staying at the club.
