Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that powerhoue midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could leave the club in the near future.

The German international, who is fighting for his place in next Summer’s World Cup squad, is coming to the end of his current contract in Dortmund and the CEO of the club knows that it may be tricky to keep hold of him due to the severe interest from European clubs and in particular Premier League clubs.

Currently Arsenal and Manchester United are leading the line in the pursuit for Gundogan, who will probably cost around ÂŁ25million, unless his contract situation isn’t sorted out and he could go for even cheaper.

This will be another blow for Jurgen Klopp and Dortmund as they are already set to lose star-asset Robert Lewandowski in the Summer, and Watzke has admitted that Gundogan could be next.

“It is our absolute desire that besides Robert Lewandowski no other regular player leaves the club,” Watzke said.

“Only in the case of Ilkay Gundogan, we do not yet know how it will turn out. We would love to extend (a contract) with him.”
