From Paris to Palace

Crystal Palace Football Club have announced the signing of Yohan Cabaye from Paris Saint-Germain this morning in a deal worth £10million.

The Frenchman was hotly tipped for a return to the Premier League after failing to break into PSG‘s first-team ever since leaving Newcastle United for the Ligue 1 champions.

Midfielder struggled in Paris

With Euro 2016 around the corner, Cabaye wanted to be playing regular first-team football in order to make it into Didier Deschamps‘ competition squad.

The 29-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal after Palace agreed to pay PSG £10m for the midfielder, making him the club’s record breaking transfer fee, beating James McArthur who cost them £7m last year.

The transfer fee could rise in the future to around £13m with bonuses and add-ons.

Cabaye only left the Premier League last January, after he completed a £19m switch from Newcastle. However, after starting just 13 games for Laurent Blanc‘s side, he made his intentions clear to leave the club and return to England.

The midfielder wanted to reunite with Alan Pardew, who he worked with at St James Park and it’s believed that’s what helped get the deal over the line.

Cabaye Statement

After signing at Selhurst Park, Cabaye had this to say to the club’s official website: “I’m happy to be here. I’ve been waiting for the decision, had the medical and now I can’t wait to focus on my new team, a new season and my new life.

“I wanted to come and play for Palace because there are some really strong players here. They finished very well last season and I think they can compete to get into the top eight.
“I also know the gaffer and have worked with him before and I’m confident with him. I want to do my best for him because he’s made a big effort to get me to come here, as well as the Chairman, so I have to say a big thank you to both of them.”
