Liverpool flop moves to Selhurst Park for £32m

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Christian Benteke from Liverpool for a fee thought to be worth around £32million after add-ons.

The Belgium striker moves to the Eagles after a year with the Reds and having scored 10 goals in 42 games for the club.

Benteke signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015 and opened his account with a winner on his home debut against Bournemouth, but fell right down the pecking order at the club after the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in October.

His final appearance came as a late substitute in the Europa League final defeat by Sevilla in May.

The 25-year-old sealed the formalities of a switch to fellow Premier League side Palace this morning. Liverpool have done well to recoup almost the full fee they paid for him a year ago, with Palace paying £27million up front and the contract containing ‘realistic’ add-ons that should take the fee up to around the £32.5million the Reds paid last summer.

A move away from Anfield always looked likely for Benteke, particularly after Jurgen Klopp told the press that having 6 strikers in his squad was too many. After the departure of Benteke, Klopp will still be looking to offload Mario Balotelli, who is behind Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings in the battle for a place in the team.
