Real Madrid star wins first award of it’s type

Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded the first ever FIFA men’s best player award.

Ronaldo has had an incredible year, winning the Champions League, Euro 2016, and the Ballon D’or.

He beat La Liga rivals Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) to the first award of it’s kind at the first ever FIFA awards in Zurich,

Ronaldo said: “Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. It’s incredible. I want to thank my teammates of Real Madrid and the coach. Thanks for everthing you have done for me. I must thank my family and my whole staff for everything they have given me. 2016 was the best year of my career. I had a lot of doubts, but at the end of it the trophies speak for themselves. They show I’ve lived up to the expectations and I achieved the best I could. This achievement is incredible. I will never forget this year. I’m really happy.”

Other winners include Claudio Ranieri, who won FIFA coach of the year, along with Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund fans, who won a special fans award for their united rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone at Anfield in the Europa League in April.
