Veteran defender edges closer to move
Augsburg defender Ragnar Klaven is having a medical at Liverpool ahead of a planned £4.2million move.
The centre-back was linked with the Reds just the other day, as they searched for defensive cover following injuries to Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho that will cause both of those players to miss the start of the season.
With Kolo Toure being released at the end of last season, this left Liverpool’s only fit first choice centre backs being Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, calling for reinforcements.
Klavan is Estonia’s captain and has more than 100 caps for his country and has had four seasons in the Bundesliga.
Joel Matip was brought in on a free transfer earlier this summer and started Sunday’s friendly at Wigan alongside Dejan Lovren.
Matip was replaced towards the end of that game after a foot problem recurred, but Klopp does not expect the injury to disrupt the Cameroon international’s pre-season.
Should Klaven pass the medical, his transfer should be completed before the end of the week, ahead of Liverpool’s tour of America in the ‘International Champions Cup’ pre-season competition.
