Schalke defender to join Reds on free
Liverpool Football Club will sign Joel Matip on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to Sky Sports News.
The Cameroonian centre-back is set to become a free agent at the end of the season as his contract expires in Germany, but according to reports, he’s already agreed a deal in principle with the Premier League outfit.
Matip will become Jurgen Klopp‘s first summer signing, and he’s expected to add several more as he continues to stamp his mark on the Liverpool side.
Matip To Sign
Klopp knows Matip well from his time in the Bundesliga as Borussia Dortmund manager, and he wants to bring him to Anfield to help strengthen the Reds‘ back-line.
Liverpool have had questions over Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren throughout the season, and have also had severe injury problems with the trio as well.
Since the news broke, Schalke have released the following statement on their official Twitter account: “Joel Matip will join LFC at the end of the season. More information to follow.”
Schalke’s sporting director has also had this to say: “His decision is nothing against Schalke.
“He wants to try something new.”
