Brendan Rodgers rejected chance to work with Louis Van Gaal at Liverpool

Reports suggest that Van Gaal was interviewed for the role of the Sporting Director at Anfield following the departure of Kenny Dalglish in 2012, however, Brendan Rodgers made clear to the Liverpool board that he didn’t need a superior figure above him.

“I’m not sure how many people the club spoke to but certainly for me coming in, I was always going to work with a team of people, rather than for a director of football,” the Welshman said.

“I always think the manager is the technical director. He is the man who oversees the football development of the club, and I believe you should take on that responsibility when you are manager.”

The current Liverpool manager felt like he needed to take “full responsibility” of the team because of “the size of the job” that he had taken on in 2012, and felt the best way to do that was to work single handedly.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool will face Louis Van Gaal’s new-look Manchester United side in the International Champions Cup final in Miami on Monday night.
