Former Blues midfielder backed Klopp to replace Mourinho
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley believes Chelsea should have sacked Jose Mourinho and replaced him with now Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Blues have already lost as many games this season (3) as they did in the Premier League last campaign, which has led some to question whether it’s time for Mourinho to go.
Burley told TalkSport: “I said a couple of weeks ago when all this nonsense was going on [with Mourinho] that Chelsea should get rid of this guy now,
“Klopp was out there, he was going to go to Liverpool and Chelsea should have gone and got him. That didn’t happen and clearly it wasn’t going to happen but that was my opinion of what they should have done. I would have gone and got him.”
Mourinho irreplaceable
The Portuguese boss has already refused to resign, with his side 16th in the table, claiming that the club couldn’t find a better manager to replace him.
“I was not saying Mourinho should go because of a few bad results. I was basing it on the fact that Chelsea are a global brand and the way Mourinho was acting, behaving and speaking outside of the 90 minutes of football was dragging the club, the players and their image through the mud.” Burley continued.
Chelsea’s players have been quick to back their manager, including Cesc Fabregas, who has failed to provide the same form for his club that helped the Blues to the title back in May.
There is understood to be no immediate threat to the manager’s job, and Mourinho will be hoping his underperforming stars can return from the international break and gain some momentum in what has been a disastrous start to the season for the west Londoners.
