The Reds legend believes Klopp must bring in quality signings
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp must invest in quality signings over the next season or two, in order to avoid losing star player Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazil international was in red-hot form for the Reds last season, as he scooped numerous end-of-season awards at the club. However, Carragher has warned Klopp that he can’t afford to be transfer shy if he wants to keep the midfielder.
Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip have come in at the back for Liverpool, alongside goalkeeper Loris Karius, while forward Sadio Mane and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum are the only two high-profile signings the Reds have made.
But, the 38-year-old insists Klopp cannot solely rely on developing talented players, like he did at previous club Borussia Dortmund, and insists some ready-made talent must come through the doors at Anfield.
“Liverpool, over the next 18 months or so, have got to get better quality around him [Coutinho] because if they don’t he may not be at the club,” Carragher admitted.
“That’s how much quality he’s got, he’s going to improve.
“So Liverpool will need better players around him.”
Coutinho has been ever present in Klopp’s side, and has started Liverpool’s first three games of the season, including a 4-3 win over Arsenal on the opening day of the season.
Klopp missed out on Mario Gotze, who returned to Dortmund from Bayern Munich this summer, while the Premier League’s other top clubs have been spending heavily.
But Coutinho’s, at times, magical performances in midfield have seen him net 30 times in 148 appearances, with Barcelona having previously shown an interest in the 24-year-old.
However, it remains to be seen if any last-minute deals can be done at Anfield, although, Klopp seems pretty content with the players already at his disposal.
