Cesc Fabregas Future With Chelsea Uncertain

Cesc Fabregas is nowhere close to breaking into Maurizio Sarri’s starting XI and it might just be his final season at Stamford Bridge.

The 31-year-old is already in the final season of his contract with the Blues and club rules dictate that player’s above 30 will can only be offered a one-year extension. David Luiz might be in the same boat as Fabregas contract wise but he is a regular starter under the Italian boss.

Luiz has started every Premier League game for Chelsea this season except one. The Brazilian is a firm favourite for Sarri in the centre-back spot but Fabregas is not in midfield.

Newcomer, Jorginho has taken up the former Arsenal player’s spot centrally and seems to be instrumental in the current Chelsea side. N’Golo Kante is registered starter in the defensive box-to-box role and Fabregas can hardly do what Charles Barkley or Matteo Kovacic does alongside the former duo.

Being a pretty stationary playmaker and losing the last bit of athleticism has not worked out well for Fabregas. He, however, is a prominent second-string option, starting most of the club’s games in the domestic Cup and Europa League.

The former Spain international brings with him a lot of experience and creative abilities. Sarri still wants him to contribute to the team, as understood from the manager’s words.

“They are very important players for us. It is very difficult to find a centre-back for this level and it is very difficult to find a centre-midfielder technically like Fabregas, so I think they have to stay with us.”
