Spaniard was dropped for FC Porto game on Wednesday

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has received the backing of manager Jose Mourinho, despite being dropped for Wednesday’s Champions League game against FC Porto.

The Spaniard missed out on the vital game at Stamford Bridge following two abysmal performances against Tottenham Hotspur and AFC Bournemouth.

Fabregas, who joined Chelsea last summer, was one of the standout performers last season in their title-winning campaign, but so far this year he’s failed to hit the same heights.

However, when speaking in his press conference ahead of Monday’s game with table-toppers Leicester City, Mourinho insisted that Fabregas has his full support and believes he’s not the only one suffering for form this year.

Mourinho Offers Fabregas Support

Mourinho said: “Last year he had a huge responsibility for the quality of our team, he was fundamental.

“This season he is at the same level as the team and it is difficult to play especially well.

“If you go player-by-player, last season – Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry – you could say were fantastic.

“This season it is more difficult to say this player is being magnificent.

“Normally players and the team have an intimate relationship.

“I don’t see Cesc differently, but what I see if that every minute the professionalism is there and he is never afraid to have the ball or to be afraid to make a mistake. I completely trust him.”
