Champions League failure could result in financial loss

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United could lose up to £150 million in finances if they fail to stay in the top four.

United failed to qualify for the Champions League last season for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign. They also failed to qualify for the Europa League, making them the first United team to fail in qualification for a European competition since 1990.

Van Gaal’s side lost at home to Southampton yesterday and their opponents leapfrogged them in the Premier League table to third. The Red Devils now sit fourth in the final Champions League spot, one point ahead of rivals Arsenal.

However, failure to stay in the final qualification spot could see some serious financial loss. Chief Executive, Ed Woodward, has confirmed lack of Champions League football next season could at least double the £50 million loss already this season.

The £50 million lost is on gate revenue and competition money, on top of the transfer money spent in the summer on players such as Angel Di Maria and Luke Shaw.

Also, if United don’t qualify for the Champions League before the 2016-17 season, the will see a reduction in some sponsorship income. Mainly their £75 million-a-year Adidas kit sponsor, which will reduce by 30% should they not qualify for Europe’s most glorified competition.
