Chelsea and Manchester City are set to battle it out for Everton playmaker Ross Barkley as they both look to add English players to their squads ahead of next season.

The England international has had a stuttering season this year, but he is deemed one of the most promising youngsters in the Premier League and despite Everton’s ÂŁ50million asking-price, the two giants could enter a battle over the Summer.

According to reports, City are prepared to offer around ÂŁ30m for the 21-year-old, but Roberto Martinez is not prepared to lower his asking price of ÂŁ50m.

Martinez is keen to build a squad around Barkley next season and will do everything in his powers to keep the Englishman at Goodison Park.

As well as Martinez, club captain, Phil Jagielka, has also discussed the importance of Barkley at the club.

“We love having him around – he is a massive threat,” he said.

“It has been difficult for Ross because it’s always hard to play in a team that is not playing well.

“This season will be one that he may not want to write about but it will be one that will make him a better player.”
