Defender announced he was leaving against board’s wishes

Chelsea are not happy with John Terry after he publicly announced the club hadn’t offered him a new contract on Sunday.

The 35-year-old announced he would be leaving Stamford Bridge just moments after the club beat MK Dons 5-1 in the FA Cup, and it was an announcement that left the Chelsea board ‘stunned’, according to reports.

The board at Stamford Bridge wanted to keep the contract news private until later on in the season, but Terry was adamant that he wanted his future sorted out by the end of January, so he chose then to announce his future plans.

With Chelsea not yet offering Terry a deal, the defender admitted that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season and will most likely move abroad to either the MLS or the Chinese Super League.

Board Unhappy

However his decision to announce his departure hasn’t gone down well at board level, as they wanted to announce the news later on in the season.

According to reports, Terry wanted to release a statement a week prior to the MK Dons game, but the club prevented him from doing so, only for the player to do it in an interview after the game.

It’s claimed Chelsea officials still might offer the 35-year-old a new contract, but they wanted to wait until the new manager was appointed before making that deal.
