Manager not happy with youngsters friendly performance

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has blasted youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and criticised his performance in a friendly against Sydney FC.

Loftus-Cheek had created a lot of buzz around Stamford Bridge last season, and was expected to feature more regularly in the first-team next term.

But Mourinho has claimed that his performance at the ANZ Stadium on Tuesday was ‘unacceptable’, and that their relationship may have taken a step back.

Mourinho, while praising his senior players for their performance after a title-winning season, was not so quick to lavish praise on Loftus-Cheek, 19.

Mourinho Vents at Youngster

‘I was happy with the performance of my senior players because it has been a long season, in fact, a very long season.

‘In one week they have to play important matches with their national teams. But they came to Thailand and Australia and respected the fans and opponents, and you could see some tired performances’, the Chelsea boss said.

‘The senior players, like (Branislav) Ivanovic, (John) Terry, Mikel and (Eden) Hazard, tried to play football and they did.

‘(Loftus-Cheek) has to learn that when you are 19 years old you have to run three times the amount of the other more experienced players.

‘You don’t have to play like a superstar with the ball at your feet because this is the not the Under-18’s.

‘He has to learn it is not the Under-18 competition which is too easy for him. But I don’t accept that a player playing in midfield with Mikel and Matic doesn’t have intensity and is waiting for other people to recover the ball.

‘Why should I accept it in an 18/19-year-old kid? He has to learn what it takes to play for Chelsea.’
