Ben Chilwell has a short window of opportunity to make an impression on Enzo Maresca and stay on the team long enough to be Chelsea’s third-choice left-back the next campaign. The Athletic says that Chelsea is willing to trade the English defender this summer if they receive a good offer, regardless of the outcome of Chilwell’s campaign.
Marc Cucurella performed admirably last season as a left-back who could switch roles and play as a midfielder, which is what Maresca is looking for. Renato Veiga, whom Chelsea recently acquired, is said to excel when playing as an inverted fullback. Reece James has already been observed practicing as an inverted right-back in advance of the preseason.

Chilwell needs to turn around a Chelsea career that has suffered three straight seasons of injuries. Only thirty more Premier League games have seen the England international, who made his debut for the team in 2020–21, named in the starting lineup. Cucurella has started nearly twice as many Premier League games for Chelsea in the last two seasons (41 vs. Chilwell’s 24), despite his own struggles with form and fitness.
With three years remaining on his contract, Chilwell is a player Chelsea may contemplate selling for the appropriate price. The more time he spends on the treatment table, the more people question the fact that he is one of the club’s top earners. But his abilities are not limited to what he can accomplish on the field.
