Chelsea could have signed Belgian forward Eden Hazard for only £100,000.

The Blues eventually signed Hazard, 24, for £32m from Lille in 2012, under then-boss Roberto Di Matteo.

But they had a chance to sign him back in 2005, when he was just 16 years old.

The club were advised to take advantage of UEFA loopholes regarding teenage players, and sign Hazard, by scout Gwyn Williams.

As Hazard had not yet signed profssional terms with Lille by this point, he would have been available for just £100,000 in compensation.

Williams was a known ally of sacked boss Jose Mourinho, and then-Director of Football Frank Arnesen ignored Williams’ advice, and Hazard stayed and signed pro terms with Lille.

One of Hazard’s key abilities is his penalty taking, he is the only player in Europe who has taken more than fifteen penalties and acored them all.
