Blues competing with London rivals Arsenal for AS Roma star

Chelsea are the latest club to be linked with a summer swoop for AS Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli, and the Premier League champions are ready to outbid London rivals Arsenal.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move away from Serie A, and it was Arsenal that were believed to be in pole position to land the defender.

Player-Swap

However, according to Sky Italia, Chelsea could use a player of their own in order to sweeten the deal for Romagnoli, which could give them the edge over The Gunners.

It’s reported that Chelsea may offer Mohamed Salah to Roma as part of the deal, moving them into pole position to land the centre-back.

Defender Wanted

The Blues are in the market for a new defender, and after seeing their £20million bid for John Stones turned down by Everton, Jose Mourinho is contemplating a cheaper alternative.

Mourinho had admitted he wants to work on Chelsea’s spine over the summer, by signing a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker.

The Portuguese has already signed a ‘keeper and a forward, but his attentions are now turned to defence and midfield.

Due to the reported interest from the Premier League, Roma have moved quickly to fend off interest, by slapping a £25million price-tag on the 20-year-old’s head.

Arsenal were believed to be interested in him as a long-term replacement for the ageing Per Mertesacker, but with Chelsea set to use Salah as part of the deal, they could miss out.
