Blues wanted to sign Benfica centre-back

Chelsea failed in a late bid to sign Benfica defender Luisao, according to reports in Portugal.

The Blues were in the market for a new central defender all throughout the summer and had John Stones from Everton as their number-one target.

However, after being rejected three times by The Toffees, they turned their attentions elsewhere, and according to reports Luisao was an alternative.

It was reported on Transfer Deadline Day that Chelsea had two formal bids turned down by Paris Saint-Germain for Marquinhos, and it’s now been revealed that Benfica snubbed the Premier League champions as well.

Defensive Additions

Eventually, Jose Mourinho‘s side did make two defensive signings by welcoming Michael Hector from Reading and Papy Djilobodji from Nantes.

Despite signing the defensive duo, Portuguese media are claiming that Mourinho offered Luisao a two-year deal to join Stamford Bridge, but his approaches were rejected.

The 34-year-old is Benfica’s longest serving captain in the club’s history and he is now looking set to retire at the club.
