Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia has revealed that both Chelsea and Manchester City made a formal offer for him whilst he was with AS Roma earlier in the Summer.

The Moroccan international told both English clubs that he wanted to remain in Italy with Roma, but near the end of the transfer window, he secured his switch to Germany and joined Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich.

Munich ended up spending ÂŁ21million on the centre-back, and in a recent interview, Benatia has admitted that interest was high in his services.

“I discussed my future with sporting director Walter Sabatini,” Benatia told German publication Kicker.

“He told me the club wanted to hold on to me but that there was a need to sell me to make money.

“That bothered me, because I wanted to stay.

“Manchester City and Chelsea wanted me, while there were also approaches from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“But let it be clear, I was happy to join Bayern Munich, although here it is a bit cold.”

Manchester United were also interested in the 27-year-old throughout the Summer, but they turned to Marcos Rojo instead as a cheaper alternative.
