Chelsea have struggled so far, and Gudjohnsen says they have to ring the changes

Former Chelsea favourite Eidur Gudjohnsen believes that manager Jose Mourinho may need drop some key players, in order to get the West-Londoners season up and running.

Chelsea have had a stuttering start to their title-defence, winning just two of their opening seven Premier League games, which led to Mourinho openly criticising his players, after Saturday’s 2-2 draw away at Newcastle United.

Gudjohnsen feels it could be time for Chelsea to axe some high-profile members of their out-of form squad, as the Blues look to reignite their campaign.

Chelsea currently reside in the unfamiliar position of 14th in the league standings, and Gudjohnsen, who won two titles in a six-year stay between 2000-2006, has had his say on the current situation affecting the club.

Speaking to Talksport, the Icelander said: “Sometimes with a little change in the team or giving a few other players a chance you can find the click that is needed.

“When you make changes to a team it might put other players on their toes and start to fear for their place in the team and automatically there is competition for places.”

The 37-year-old, who now plays in the Chinese top-flight with Shijiazhuang Ever Bright, after a brief return to England with Bolton Wanderers last season, is confident that his former manager will eventually get things back on track at Stamford Bridge.

“Too many players have yet to start their season really – important players for Chelsea who haven’t found their form yet,” Gudjohnsen continued.

“The team can handle one or two players losing form but when it is the majority of the squad, it is a problem.

“But if there is one man I believe can find the answer, it is Jose Mourinho.
