Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta believes the players should be embarrassed after their 1-0 defeat to FC Basel on Tuesday night in the Champions League and he has warned his team-mates that inconsistency will cost them silverware.
The Blues travelled to Switzerland for revenge after they were beaten 2-1 at Stamford Bridge by Basel earlier on in the campaign, but the night ended badly as they conceded in the 88th minute to Mohamed Salah and the visitors lost 1-0.
In fact, throughout the 90-minutes, Chelsea didn’t have a single shot on goal and Azpilicueta believes the players should be embarrassed after their abysmal showing.
“Yes, offensively we didn’t have our best game or create a lot of chances.
“Basel played really well and pushed a lot, but for a team like Chelsea we need to create chances to score goals.
“If you want to win you need to shoot.
“We didn’t want to do this. We tried to do our best and it’s true the fans came from London and a lot of countries to be here and we didn’t have our best game.
“The only thing I can say is that for the next game we will try to do better and score goals.”
“The reason why we didn’t win a lot of trophies, or lost a lot of games this season, is because we don’t keep the level to win every game,” he added.
“For Chelsea that can’t be possible. Sometimes you can lose but I think we can play better.”
