Gary Cahill won’t face futher action

The FA have confirmed that Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is unlikely to receive any punishment in response to his post-match comments criticizing referee Andre Marriner following the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Swansea on Sunday.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had just cancelled out a Diego Costa opener when Leroy Fer robbed Cahill and beat Thibaut Courtois to put Swansea in front in the Premier League game at the Liberty Stadium.

Cahill was angry at Fer’s challenge not being deemed a foul, and took to Twitter to vent his frustrations. He posted a video of the incident accompanied with the word “incredible” and a series of angry-faced emojis.

The England defender later deleted his tweet, but in a post-match interview with the BBC he claimed the officials could have been “sat on the moon” and still spotted the offence.

He said: “It’s a clear foul. Come on, seriously. It was clear as day and seeing it back has made me even more angry.

“I said to the referee ‘there’s three of you that can see that’. There were two fouls on me and between the officials they have said that they couldn’t see it. For me that is incredible.”

However, the FA have stated that players or managers can criticise an official’s performance and decisions as long as they don’t imply bias, question their integrity or make offensive, personal comments.
