A boost for the Blues as Conte would have 14 days to sign another target but there’s a but.
The Blues would have 14 days to sign Tottenham defender Toby Aldeweireld for £25m, but only if Spurs choose to trigger the option to extend Toby’s contract.
Football Leaks claim a £25m release clause will be active for 14 days if Spurs activate a contract extension, However, Chelsea will have to deal with offers from City who will be among the clubs looking at his situation at the end of the campaign and whether a deal is sorted.
Alderweireld’s deal runs until 2019 but, if the option to add a further year is taken up, it would mean a £25 million release clause — which could be triggered that summer — would come into play.
The Sun journalist Mike McGrath used Football Leaks as the source for this particular detail of the release clause. Tottenham are unlikely to trigger the contract extension though unless the player heads into the final year of his contract in 2019 without signing a new deal.
The Telegraph adds, means Tottenham “may have to seriously consider listening to offers if no new contract can be agreed.”
