The France youngster is set for a spell in the Bundesliga

Schalke are set to take highly-rated Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on loan, in order to step up the France international’s recovery from a serious knee injury.

The 21-year-old suffered the setback in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United, back in February, and it is understood Antonio Conte is willing to allow Zouma to leave on loan.

During Guus Hiddink’s brief second spell in caretaker charge of the club, the Frenchman was close to replacing Gary Cahill in his backline, although, it seems the England international’s place in the team is currently safe under the Italian.

Zouma is yet to recover from the injury, while John Terry and Cahill have done well in his absence, helping Conte win his first four games in charge.

The fact that Chelsea are keen to send him out on loan suggests they are confident of landing a deal for a new defender, despite finding their pursuit of Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly difficult, and seeing a ÂŁ35 million bid for Alessio Romagnoli rejected by AC Milan.

However, should Conte miss out in his targets, Branislav Ivanovic can step in at centre-back, as he has done on previous occasions, although the Chelsea boss would like to bring in a natural centre-back.
