Tottenham move closer to securing the services of Steaua Bucharest central defender Vlad Chiriches according to the Romanian club’s manager. Spurs failed in an earlier bid for Chiriches but it is now believed an £8.5 million bid has landed the 6 foot 1” centre back.
Tottenham have been left short at centre back after the departure of Steven Caulker to Cardiff for £9 million early in the window, alongside the departure of William Gallas.
Chiriches has won 19 caps for Romania and is believed to be playing in Bucharest’s Champions League second leg play-off against Legia Warsaw on Tuesday before moving to the North London club. Chiriches can play at full-back or in midfield but plays primarily as a centre back.
Bucharest manager Laurentiu Reghecampf told a press conference of Saturday that ‘the two clubs have agrees to transfer him. I’m very happy for him. I cannot say the amount for which (he was) transferred, but it is very high. It will be the most expensive transfer in the history of Steaua. The owner says that all there is left to do is sign some documents. We hope he will help us Tuesday night if he can.’
