According Chris Sutton, Chelsea already look to be out of the title race, with their lack of squad depth startling

Christopher Roy Sutton is a retired English professional football player and former manager. He played as a forward from 1991 to 2007 for Norwich City, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Celtic, Birmingham City and Aston Villa.

The Blues went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat by the Eagles at Selhurst Park on Saturday which make it two defeats in a row in the Premier League following their 1-0 loss to Manchester City before the international break.

The result left the Pensioners in fifth place and already nine points behind pace-setters Manchester City after eight games of the new season.

And former Chelsea striker believes that the west London side can already count themselves out of the Premier League title race after their recent results.

Sutton wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Chelsea are out of the title race — and hopes of defending their crown looked doomed in the summer when they did not adequately strengthen their squad.”

“Could Antonio Conte really expect Morata to start 30 games — especially given the demands of the Premier League? And if he did not, then why didn’t he buy an upgrade on Michy Batshuayi?”

“Contrast this with the fact that Manchester City could afford to have Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero on the bench against Stoke. Conte would surely give anything to have those players.”

“Missing Morata and N’Golo Kante at Palace, Chelsea looked a pale imitation of the side who won the title.”

“With the players available, Conte can’t expect to compete at the highest level. Chelsea have left themselves short.”
