Costa and Atletico hint at Madrid return

Atletico make no secret of desire to resign former striker

Atletico Madrid and Diego Costa have both made big hints that they would like to rekindle the relationship they had before the Spain international left for Chelsea.

It is no secret that the Madrid club would like the Brazil-born striker to return to the Vicente Calderon, with the 27-year-old unsettled at Stamford Bridge.

And club president, Enrique Cerezo, has made the biggest hint yet that Costa will return to Spain this summer, while Chelsea are yet to appoint a new manager for next season.

“We have a great relationship with our past players,” Cerezo recently said.

“Diego is a great player, but a Chelsea player.

“We will try to do our best and see what Chelsea say, it does not depend on us.

“We always try to bring the best players and Diego is one of them.”

Twists and turns

While Cerezo will do his best in the summer to bring Costa back to Atletico Madrid, after missing out on the striker in January, the player himself has hinted at a return.

“You never know, look where Filipe is now,” Costa said in December.

“Life takes plenty of twists and turns – I always wish Atletico the best and I always follow them, support them from far.”
Costa has become unsettled in west London, after a touchline disagreement with former boss Jose Mourinho, before he was sacked at the end of 2015, and a large dip in form this campaign.
He’s fell well short of the 21 goals he scored in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign last season, scoring 10 this term, and a return to his native Spain looks likely to be his next move.
The 27-year-old bagged 64 goals in 135 appearances for Atletico, before joining Chelsea for ÂŁ32 million in 2014.
