Atletico are keen to trigger Costa’s £28 million release clause
Diego Costa could be set for a shock £28 million return to Atletico Madrid, with the club prepared to bring him back to the Vicente Calderon.
The Spain international has struggled for form this season at Chelsea, scoring just four goals all campaign after netting 21 times last season.
Reports suggest Atletico would be keen for Costa to return after Jackson Martinez has failed to impress in the Spanish capital since his move from Porto in the summer.
A strained relationship with Jose Mourinho, which saw Costa throw his bib on return to the bench after a warm-up, has also increased the chances of the move happening.
Simeone excited by prospect of Costa reunion
Atletico boss Diego Simeone is understood to be excited at the return of Costa to Atletico, where the Brazil-born Spain international made a name for himself and caught the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Costa was a part of the Atletico side that met their local rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League final in May last year, in an exciting period in Atletico’s recent history.
Whether Chelsea would be interested in letting their star strike go, regardless of recent form, is another question.
