Could Lionel Messi join Chelsea next summer?
Rumours in the Daily Star today say that Chelsea will make an offer to sign Lionel Messi when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The five time Ballon d’Or winner is still yet to sign an extension with Barcelona, and the paper says that he has also has offers from China, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi is arguably the greatest player of all time and a legend at the Camp Nou, where he has spent the last 17 years. Could it be time for him to take on a new challenge?
Barca may be top of La Liga and their Champions League group, but after Neymar left in the summer there is talk that they are on the decline, especially after Real Madrid’s double last season.
The Argentine has achieved everything there is to achieve at Barcelona. The Star also says that recent unrest in Catalonia has left him feeling unsettled.
Rumours suggest that he will renew, but in six weeks he will be free to negotiate with other teams if he doesn’t sign before then.
If it’s money that Messi is after then there is also the option of playing in China. It was reported this week that an unnamed team is prepared to make him an offer worth a stunning £134million a year.
However, La Liga president Javier Tebas seems to think that the 30 year-old has already renewed at the Camp Nou.
“Messi has a contract which has been renewed,” said Tebas, at a media event organised by Europa Press.
“Contracts are official when they are signed and not when it is announced that they have been signed. Messi has signed with Barcelona, if I have not been lied to, he has signed.”
